A First Responder scheme is made up of groups of volunteers who, within the community in which they live or work, have been trained to attend emergency 999 calls received by the East of England Ambulance Service.
We are all trained to use specialist medical equipment such as an Automated External Defibrillator and Oxygen to assist Ambulance crews and maintain or improve patient stability until the arrival of Paramedics.
The aim of being a volunteer First Responder is to respond to immediate life threatening calls received by the East of England Ambulance Service. These calls will be within an agreed geographical area and fall within a set criteria which will include cardiac/respiratory arrest, chest pain, unconsciousness, collapse and choking. Early intervention, support and treatment of the patient will increase the chances of survival for Cardiac arrest victims by use of early basic life support and automatic defibrillation.
First Responders are well regarded by the Ambulance Service as they understand that saving a life can be achieved in the minutes before they get to a call.
